UNESCO Chief Denounces Roee Idan's Killing in Israel

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of Roee Idan in Israel on 7 October 2023.

I condemn the killing of Roee Idan. The work of photojournalists is central to assist societies in documenting crises and conflicts, which is key to holding accountable those responsible for violence and human rights violations. I call upon the authorities to undertake a full investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Roee Idan, a photographer for the Israeli news outlet Ynet had been reported missing since 7 October, following the Hamas attack on Kibbutz Kfar Aza. His death was confirmed on 20 October after his body was recovered and identified.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
