UNESCO Chief Denounces Yaniv Zohar's Killing in Israel

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Yaniv Zohar in southern Israel on 7 October 2023.

I condemn the killing of Yaniv Zohar. I call upon the authorities to undertake a full investigation to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice. Impunity for crimes against journalists must not be tolerated.

Zohar was a photographer for Israeli Hebrew-language daily newspaper Israel HaYom. He had previously reported for The Associated Press (AP) on violent conflict in the region. He was killed on 7 October during the Hamas attack on Kibbutz Nahal Oz in southern Israel.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
