UNESCO Director-General Condemns Killing of Journalist in Guatemala

Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Eduardo Fernando Mendizabal Gálvez in a suburb of Guatemala City on 18 March.

I condemn the killing of Eduardo Fernando Mendizabal Gálvez and call on the authorities to investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice. Violence targeting journalists and their right to exercise their profession deprives society, notably local communities, of the ability to enjoy other rights, including the right to information.
Audrey Azoulay
UNESCO’s Director-General

Community journalist Gálvez, founder of the Visor de Villa Canales digital news site, was shot while driving his car in Villa Canales on the outskirts of Guatemala City and died of his injuries in hospital.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
