Unis Back Royal Commission on Antisemitism, Cohesion

Universities Australia supports the Albanese Government's decision to establish a Royal Commission, to be led by former High Court Justice Virginia Bell, into the tragic Bondi terror attack and the broader issue of rising antisemitism in our nation.

The horrific events of 14 December 2025 shocked our country and underscore the urgent need for deep reflection, understanding and decisive action to address the scourge of antisemitism.

Our hearts remain with the Jewish community, particularly with the families and loved ones of those killed and injured, in the wake of this senseless and unthinkable tragedy.

Universities Australia and our 39 member institutions unequivocally condemn antisemitism and all forms of hatred. Violence and division have no place in Australia.

The Royal Commission provides a vital opportunity to examine the conditions that allowed hatred and violence to escalate, to learn from those insights, and to ensure that all Australians can live free from fear and discrimination.

The university sector will engage fully and constructively with this process.

We reaffirm our commitment to working with government, the Jewish community and sectors right across our country to combat antisemitism and all forms of hatred.

Universities exist to advance knowledge, foster critical inquiry and model the values of a democratic society. Antisemitism, whether expressed through language, symbols, conduct or intimidation, is incompatible with these purposes. It is not protected by academic freedom, free speech, or context. It must be addressed decisively.

Universities are foundational to shaping the values of future generations, and we are determined to be part of the solution - through education, research and our unwavering commitment to providing safe and respectful campus environments.
