Unlawful use of a motor vehicle and burglary charges in Townsville, QLD

Police have charged a man following a series of car thefts and burglaries in the Townsville area, Queensland Police say.

It will be alleged that overnight on August 17, a car was stolen from out the front of a unit on Eyre Street in North Ward.

The vehicle was located damaged on August 19 and was forensically examined.

A set of fingerprints were located in the car.

On the evening of September 15, a home on Spencer Avenue in Kirwan was broken into.

A small amount of cash, an iPad and a mobile phone were stolen.

Then overnight, two vehicles were stolen after a home on Benjamina Street at Mount Sheridan was broken into and their keys retrieved.

As well, a car was allegedly stolen after keys, a laptop, passport and other personal items were removed from a home that had been broken into on Arlington Court at Thuringowa Central.

The car was located in a lake opposite Martinez Avenue in West End this morning.

Around 6am, an allegedly stolen Commodore was stopped after a successful deployment of a tyre deflation device on the Bruce Highway near Toomulla.

A 19-year-old Kirwan man – the driver of the vehicle – was arrested and taken to the Townsville Watch House.

He has been charged with three counts of burglary and three counts of unlawful of a motor vehicle.

He is due to appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Officers from Townsville general duties, the Property Crime Unit, the Rapid Action and Patrol Group, the Criminal Investigation Branch and the Child Protection and Investigation Unit work collaboratively to target offenders – often recidivists – who steal from others, damage property, steal cars or break into homes.

Police will continue to target those type of offences and put offenders before the Courts as part of a commitment to keep the people of Townsville safe.
