UNM Honors Beloved Lobo Jessica Hermosillo

Jessica Hermosillo, though she was a proud Lobo for just three years in her role as the University's facility security officer, brought with her an impressive wealth of experience—spanning 22 years in the defense contracting field. Her extensive background provided her with a profound understanding of security operations, a testament to her dedication and expertise.

Jessica died in October after a brief battle against cancer, leaving behind a loving husband of 12 years and three children.

"Jessica was passionate about mentoring and developing other security professionals to strengthen and protect national security, UNM Vice President for Research Ellen Fisher said. "It's individuals like Jessica who inspire our continued commitment to UNM's research mission."

Last year, Hermosillo was honored with an Advancing Compliance and Ethics (ACE) Award. Each year, UNM honors individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication to advancing compliance and ethics and who actively contribute to creating a stronger, more ethical UNM community. Hermosillo was remembered at this year's event celebrating the 2025 awardees as someone who epitomized the intent behind the ACE awards.

Her family say her journey was characterized by her relentless work ethic and determination, illustrating her resilience and self-sufficiency.

One of Hermosillo's most valued mantras included "If you always do the right thing, you never have to worry." At UNM, Hermosillo's responsibility included assisting faculty and staff with information on threat awareness to protect intellectual property, disclosure requirements, and reporting responsibilities.

"Jessica was a wonderful colleague with such a strong work ethic and always willing to help," said Linda Mayo, UNM Office of Research Integrity and Compliance executive director. "She took security very seriously and always prioritized sharing knowledge and guidance to set UNM researchers up for success."

Hermosillo was an expert in industrial security, held the highest-level clearance, and was UNM's liaison with the FBI in matters of national security. She most recently collaborated with UNM's Office of Research Integrity and Compliance to create The University's online research security training.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Hermosillo embraced a rich list of hobbies that reflected her vibrant personality. With a love for knitting, she recently picked up the art of crocheting as she found joy in creating unique, handcrafted pieces. Her adventurous spirit took her to new heights as she traveled the world and climbed mountains, seeking the thrill and beauty of the outdoors. Her culinary creativity shone brightly as she spent countless hours creating one-of-a-kind dishes, which she generously shared with her colleagues in Scholes Hall and throughout UNM, fostering connections with every bite.

"Her legacy of commitment to safety and her unwavering spirit will surely be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with Jessica," VPR Fisher said.
