Unstable trees on Flinders Street removed

Council crews have removed 23 trees from Flinders Street because they had become unstable and were at risk of falling over from the unprecedented rain.

The lophostemon trees were removed this morning. All other trees – including the fig trees – remain in place.

Townsville Local Recovery and Resilience Group Chair Cr Les Walker said mature trees will be replanted on Flinders Street as soon as possible.

"Unfortunately, the trees had become unstable in the unprecedented monsoon," Cr Walker said.

"Council will replant mature trees on Flinders Street as soon as possible and we will keep the community informed on the progress.

"The recovery from this unprecedented monsoon and flood is going to take some time and be felt right across our community."
