UPDATE Appeal for witnesses after fatal crash - Benandarah, South Coast

Police are appealing for witnesses after a fatal crash on the state's south coast overnight.

About 2:50am (Sunday 7 February 2021), officers from Batemans Bay Highway Patrol were on routine patrol on the Princes Highway at Benandarah when they located a Ford Falcon sedan crashed into a tree and on fire.

The fire was extinguished, and a female passenger was located with serious injuries inside the car.

A short time later, officers located the body of the driver. He has yet to be formally identified.

The injured passenger was extracted about 5am and airlifted to Canberra Hospital with serious injuries.

Officers from South Coast Police District established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage are asked to contact Batemans Bay Police or crime stoppers.

A contraflow is in place and motorists are being asked to avoid the area due to extended delays.
