Update - Youth Disturbance - Don Dale Youth Detention Centre

Northern Territory Police have charged eight male youths, following a disturbance at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre in October 2018.

Police were called to the centre at around 7:00pm on Saturday, 20 October responding to reports that a group of youths were causing damage to infrastructure and had gained access to keys to the facility after a staff member was assaulted, Northern Territory Police say

Following complex and protracted investigations by detectives, eight youths who remain in custody have now been summoned to appear in Darwin Youth Justice Court on 18 December, 2018.

The charges include:

  • Take part in riot
  • Riot-Fail to disperse
  • Engage in violent conduct
  • Obstructing/Hindering a member of the staff of a detention centre
  • Attempt escape detention centre

Further charges are expected to be laid as investigations continue.
