Updating Australia’s education agenda

The education community will have an opportunity to shape a new contemporary vision for Australian education after state and territory education ministers agreed to review the 2008 Melbourne Declaration at the meeting of the COAG Education Council in Adelaide today.

The Melbourne Declaration articulates nationally consistent future directions and aspirations for Australian schooling.

“A review of the declaration will consider life-long education for all Australians – from early childhood, primary and secondary schools, through to higher education, vocational training and beyond,” Mr Tehan said.

“Our children deserve a world-leading education that is tailored to their individual learning needs, and sets them up to succeed in the modern world.

“The review of the Melbourne Declaration will involve an extensive and inclusive consultation that hears from students, teachers, principals and parents.”

The Education Council will host a forum in February 2019 to commence the consultation process in collaboration with key stakeholder groups.

All ministers also agreed on a program of work to support the implementation of eight policy initiatives as part of rolling out the National School Reforms.

“Every state and territory, except Victoria, has now signed up to the National School Reform Agreement, which unlocks record Federal Government funding to all schools in their jurisdictions and commits them to delivering essential reforms,” Mr Tehan said.
