Upgrade Blitz For Key Geelong Corridor

VIC Premier

A $9.6 million program of upgrades along the Princes Freeway at Geelong is set to start next week, to provide a safer and smoother journey for the thousands of people who use the major corridor every day.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said the program of rolling works to asphalt 14 kilometres of key sections between Waurn Ponds and Little River would start on Monday, 9 November.

The upgrades are part of the Victorian Government's two-year $425 million investment to rebuild and resurface regional roads across the state.

The program will upgrade eleven sections of Colac-bound lanes between Little River and Draytons Road, and five Melbourne-bound lanes between the Hamilton Highway overpass and Beach Road off-ramp.

The Princes Freeway has an average of 47,000 commuter, commercial and tourist vehicles using it each day at Corio, making it a vital link between Geelong, Melbourne, the Surf Coast and south west Victoria.

Lane closures and reduced speed limits will be in place, however every effort will be made to limit the disruption for drivers.

These measures include rolling out the works at night from 8.30pm to 5am from Sundays to Thursdays, reopening lanes during the day and pausing works during the peak tourist season from Friday, 18 December to Sunday, 31 January.

These upgrades follow nearly 30 kilometres of improvements delivered along the Princes Freeway over the past two maintenance seasons.

The latest traffic conditions are available at traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au or via the VicTraffic mobile app.

As stated by Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll

"We're rolling out a major program of work on this important route over coming months to provide everyone travelling between Melbourne and Geelong and beyond with a smoother, safer and more reliable journey."

"Crews will work on these sites outside peak travel times to limit the disruption to traffic, particularly when Melburnians could soon be able to safely visit and enjoy all that the Surf Coast and south west Victoria have to offer."
