Latrobe City Council is reinforcing its commitment to community safety, improved amenity and reliable access to all-day parking, following significant proactive works undertaken at the Seymour Street multi-storey car park in Traralgon.
Council has recently completed a suite of upgrades to enhance visibility, safety and comfort for users. This includes replacing all existing light fixtures with brighter and more energy-efficient LED lighting, along with the installation of additional lights at key entry and exit points of the car park. Designs have been progressed for new dynamic signage that will display real time parking availability to motorists which will be installed early in the new year.
Latrobe City Council Mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson said the works reflect Council focusing on improving safety and so that the public can have confidence using the carpark.
"We want the community, especially workers in the Traralgon CBD, to feel comfortable using the multi-storey car park for long-stay parking," said the Mayor.
"These upgrades are a key step to ensuring the facility remains safe, well-maintained, and welcoming for workers, shoppers and visitors throughout the day."
Council has also undertaken a comprehensive review of security operations at the site. This review will result in a public tender process being launched in coming weeks, enabling Council to explore improved or expanded services, including increased patrol frequency and higher visibility of security officers, particularly around enclosed areas and stairwells.
Additional measures are also being assessed to enhance both passive and active surveillance, including improved signage to highlight CCTV coverage and provide clear contact information for Victoria Police and security providers. Frequent inspections and cleaning of the car park to address rubbish and maintain high standards are also underway.
"We are taking a multi-layered approach to safety," said the Mayor.
"While addressing anti-social behaviour remains the responsibility of Victoria Police, the presence of active security services, CCTV and appropriate signage supports deterrence and gives users greater peace of mind."
The Seymour Street multi-storey car park remains Traralgon's primary all-day parking option for workers and visitors, the Mayor noting a safe car park is one that is well-used.
"Encouraging workers to take advantage of the all-day parking options, rather than on-street short-stay spaces that customers can then not use, helps stimulate local retail turnover and keeps the CBD thriving which benefits us all," said the Mayor.
"We are committed to ensuring the car park remains a safe, functional and accessible community asset.
