Little Wategos Beach Walking Track in Cape Byron State Conservation Area is set to receive a facelift this summer, with National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) upgrading the track to improve visitor experience.
NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service Tweed Byron Area Acting Manager Jenny Atkins said the upgrades will include a new walking surface, safety fencing and two viewing areas.
"Little Wategos Beach is a little slice of paradise and the eastern-most beach on mainland Australia," said Ms Atkins.
"The popularity of this picturesque spot has sky-rocketed in recent years. As a result, we're looking to improve visitor access to the beach and provide two new lookout locations.
"These upgrades will significantly improve the comfort and safety of this area for visitors, as well as help to protect the vulnerable grasslands and other native flora and fauna within Cape Byron State Conservation Area.
"Works will commence mid-September and are expected to take twelve weeks, with completion set for the end of December 2020.
"Access to Little Wategos Beach will be closed to the public during this time. The main Cape Byron Walking Track will remain open.
"We thank everyone for their patience during the temporary closure," said Ms Atkins.
Upgrades to the Little Wategos Beach walking track were recommended in the Cape Byron Master Plan, which aims to provide a world class walking experience for visitors to the Cape Byron State Conservation Area.
