Key facts
In the June 2025 quarter:
- the seasonally adjusted total building volume fell 1.8 percent compared with the March 2025 quarter - residential fell 2.9 percent, and non-residential fell 0.4 percent
- total building value was $7.8 billion, down 8.5 percent from the June 2024 quarter.

Seasonally adjusted building activity volume
The seasonally adjusted building activity volume series removes the effects of typical seasonal patterns and changes to construction costs. Volumes are calculated at September 2022 quarter prices.
Residential construction prices were flat in the June 2025 quarter, while non-residential prices rose 0.4 percent (as measured by the capital goods price index).
The total seasonally adjusted building volume fell 1.8 percent in the June 2025 quarter (following a 1.3 percent rise in the March 2025 quarter). Within this:
- residential building fell 2.9 percent (following a 2.8 percent rise in the March 2025 quarter)
- non-residential building fell 0.4 percent (following a 1.3 percent fall in the March 2025 quarter).

Regional actual value of building work
In value terms (not adjusted for cost changes or seasonal effects), the actual value of building work was $7.8 billion in the June 2025 quarter, down 8.5 percent from the June 2024 quarter.
Within this, residential building work was down 9.1 percent to $4.8 billion, and non-residential work was down 7.5 percent to $3.1 billion.
By region, the actual value of total building work in the June 2025 quarter compared with the June 2024 quarter, was:
- $3.1 billion in Auckland (down 10 percent)
- $631 million in Waikato (down 13 percent)
- $644 million in Wellington (down 9.8 percent)
- $1.2 billion in the rest of the North Island (down 13 percent)
- $1.3 billion in Canterbury (down 3.6 percent)
- $936 million in the rest of the South Island (up 1.0 percent).

Actual value of building work on non-residential buildings
The non-residential building types with the most work put in place (by value) in the year ended June 2025 were:
- offices, administration, and public transport buildings at $2.3 billion (up 3.2 percent compared with the year ended June 2024)
- hospitals, nursing homes, and health buildings at $2.0 billion (up 6.2 percent)
- factories and industrial buildings at $1.7 billion (down 1.8 percent)
- education buildings at $1.6 billion (down 17 percent).

Changes to online questionnaires for the June 2025 quarter
From the June 2025 quarter we have moved to a new online survey platform. This platform includes automated checks, improved number formatting, and contextual information about building projects. Most respondents are now sent their survey URL by email instead of post. These changes have resulted in an improved response rate and better-quality responses.
