Vehicles Seized – Angurugu

Groote Eylandt Police have seized two vehicles under anti-hooning legislation.

Around 12:00pm on 21 January members attempted to apprehend a vehicle which was observed driving through bush tracks.

The vehicle failed to stop and fishtailed along wet, muddy and unsealed road until the vehicle occupants got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

The 21-year-old male driver and female passenger were arrested following a short foot chase. The passenger was released without charge.

The driver was issued a notice to appear for:

• Drive Manner Dangerous

• Drive Motor Vehicle While Unlicensed

• Drive Unregistered/Uninsured Motor Vehicle

• Drive Motor Vehicle Unsafe to Drive

Separately, a 17-year-old male had his vehicle seized for 48 hours after he was located driving dangerously on unsealed road on the same day.

He was issued a traffic infringement notice for:

• Fail to Stop

• Cause Loss of Traction

• Drive Unregistered/Uninsured Motor Vehicle

• Drive Motor Vehicle Unsafe to Drive

Senior Sergeant Tanya Woodcock said this behaviour is disappointing particularly since a fatal crash in December caused the community a great deal of distress.

"Although traffic enforcement has brought about an improvement of compliance with driving laws, hooning is an ongoing serious risk to the safety of the public.

"Vehicle seizures, prosecutions, and the issuing of fines will continue until these drivers get the message that their reckless behaviour is distressing and frustrating not only for the police, but also the people in our townships," she said.
