Verma Meets with Guatemalan President-Elect Arévalo

Deputy Secretary Richard Verma met with Guatemalan President-elect Bernardo Arévalo yesterday in Guatemala City. Deputy Secretary Verma and President-elect Arévalo emphasized the need to deepen U.S.-Guatemala cooperation to address the root causes of migration from Central America. They stressed their shared interest in working together to support inclusive economic prosperity and stronger democratic institutions in Guatemala. Deputy Secretary Verma noted the full support of the United States for a smooth transition to President-elect Arévalo's administration and the commitment of the United States to support the will of the Guatemalan people. Deputy Secretary Verma also reaffirmed that the United States stands with our partners in the international community and with the Guatemalan people in rejecting efforts to undermine Guatemala's democracy.
