The state's number one home insurer, RACV is urging Victorians to check that their home security solutions, like security cameras and alarms, are in good working condition and are being used properly.
The warning comes after the release of RACV's annual Burglary Statistics report showed an alarming number of Victorian households have security cameras and alarm systems that don't work properly or aren't used at all even if they are in a working condition.
The RACV Burg Stats show:
-53% of people agree or strongly agree that they could be doing more when it comes to their home security
-20% of people with an installed monitored security system are not using these – either they aren't in working order or are rarely or never activated
-14% of people with a DIY surveillance system are not using these – either they are not working or never or rarely activated
RACV General Manager Business Solutions, Raymond Orre said now was the best time to check security cameras and alarm systems before the busy Christmas period.
"Christmas is typically the time when opportunistic criminals are on the lookout for their next quick steal, particularly as more of us are buying gifts for family and friends from online retailers," Mr Orre said.
"VicPol figures show a spike in package theft, with more than 140 people reporting mail theft offences in 2018. More than double the cases of 2017 and the highest year to date.
"Thankfully, there are a few simple measures you can take to help reduce your chances of having possessions taken from the front door, or even worse, inside your house, including investing in simple smart home devices, which allow you to monitor your home.
"Installing smart security cameras and monitoring systems can act as a deterrent for criminals and, in the event of a burglary, can aid police investigations," he said.
