Victoria Police VPS achieved Disability Confident Recruiter!

Over 1,000 vacancies are advertised at Victoria Police each year and lots of candidates apply for these positions. What a thrill to know that each candidate with disability applying will now be able to put their best foot forward.

VPS – Victorian Public Sector at VicPol includes all Public Sector Staff as well as Police Custody Officers. The Public Sector staff achieved in October and we determined that we needed PCOs part of the journey too as they are classified as VPS. PCOs are responsible for overseeing the management of persons in custody. Much of the essential requirements are aspects such as requiring verbal and written communication skills, and workplace adjustments will be applied throughout. A huge achievement in the attitude change here.

Working on this for over two years I'm thrilled they got over the line and can announce this on IDPwD! What a huge success for the team.

"Over two years ago, the chair of our employees with disability network, VP Enablers raised the issue of discriminatory recruitment processes with the Executive Leadership. He highlighted how it disadvantaged him personally but also impacted other employees with disability who were not willing to voice their concerns with management. Following this, our Executive Director HRD committed to Victoria Police participating in the DCR program to address some of the systemic barriers that people with disability face in our recruitment and selection processes."

"Having completed the Discovery Phase of DCR we now have developed an unwavering commitment to remove any potential systemic barriers that people with disability face in our recruitment and selection processes to create equality for all."
