New statistics have reaffirmed Victoria's status as the motor car theft capital of the nation under Ben Carroll and Labor.
Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Recorded Crime - Victims have confirmed Victoria reported 24,929 victims of motor vehicle theft in 2025, almost double New South Wales (12,689) and more than 37 per cent of victims nationally.
In 2025, Victoria recorded highest number of victims of motor vehicle theft since 2002, at a rate of almost three victims an hour.
This record number of car thefts is adding to cost of living pressures, with the Insurance Council of Australia confirming Victoria's motor vehicle theft insurance bill of $243 million is higher than all other mainland states combined.
Under Labor, crime remains at all-time highs as more than 40 police stations remain closed or operating on reduced hours and more than 1,400 vacancies remain on police rosters on any given day.
Only our Liberal and Nationals team has a plan to reduce crime and keep Victorians safe. A Jess Wilson led Government will:
- Recruit 3,000 more police and reopen closed stations.
- Return PSOs to every metropolitan train station.
- Implement real Adult Crime, Adult Time laws - including for motor vehicle theft, arson and attempted carjackings.
- Introduce Break Bail, Face Jail laws - meaning a tough new one-strike rule for bail.
- Establish a new Court of Criminal Appeal with specialist judges to enforce our tough new laws.
Shadow Minister for Police and Corrections, Brad Battin, said: "Under Labor, cops are down, crime is up and Victorians are paying the price.
"Victoria has become the motor vehicle theft capital of the nation, with almost three more Victorians becoming a victim every single hour.
"Labor crime crisis is not only hurting Victorians, but it is hitting hip pockets, with insurance bills soaring due to record number of cars being stolen.
"Only our Liberal and Nationals team has a plan to reduce crime and keep Victorians safe."
