The Victorian Auditor-General's report has revealed:
- $11.31 billion net cost increase across the life of 89 projects.
- 369 quarters of combined delay across 81 projects. That's over 92 years of delay.
- 40 projects have blown their original completion dates.
- Thirteen projects don't have an approved business case.
- Public reporting on major projects is lacking transparency, with five projects changing their total estimated cost without it being disclosed in the budget papers.
This is money that could have been spent on fixing our roads, employing more nurses, teachers and police, and providing essential health and education services.
When billions of dollars blow out and basic transparency is missing, it creates the perfect conditions for waste, rorting and corruption.
It comes as the Ombudsman has also raised concerns that the Allan government's agency overseeing the $100 billion Big Build is vulnerable to corruption due to poor record-keeping on taxpayer spending.
For two days, the Liberals and Nationals have put forward sensible legislation that would clean up crime and corruption in Victoria.
Labor refused to support this - showing once again the lack of respect they have for taxpayer money.
Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Treasurer Jess Wilson said: "Major projects are meant to improve lives and boost the economy, but under Labor, they've become a playground for organised crime."
"Only a Wilson Liberal and Nationals government will enforce the law, find the money and stop the rorts."
Shadow Minister for Major Projects Evan Mulholland said: "This is a government that is not serious about spending taxpayer money wisely. We see blowout after blowout on major projects, and delay after delay."
"Labor cannot manage money, cannot manage major projects and it's Victorians who are paying the price."
