Virtus World Athletics 2025 Countdown Begins

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

Brisbane is set to welcome hundreds of elite athletes this October in a celebration of sport inclusion.

The Virtus World Athletics Championships will take place from 8-15 October, and will be the third Virtus athletics competition to be held in Brisbane following the 2019 Virtus Global Games and 2022 Virtus Oceania Asia Games.

The event is hosted by Sport Inclusion Australia, working in partnership with Queensland Athletics to deliver a full athletics program, including youth events, for athletes with an intellectual impairment.

It is the 11th edition of the Virtus World Championships, which returns to Australia 20 years after the fifth edition was hosted in Canberra in 2005.

The Australian Government is proud to support the Virtus World Athletic Championships 2025, providing $460,000 in funding.

The event will bring together over 300 athletes from more than 20 nations and is a key milestone on the green and gold runway to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Championships are not only about competition. The event is also an opportunity to celebrate inclusion and create better awareness and understanding of the ability of people with an intellectual impairment.

Our department, through the Office for Sport, plays a key role in securing major sporting events like this by coordinating the government's involvement in the bidding and hosting of major international sporting events of national significance.
