An interactive light sculpture is coming to Crown Street Mall this weekend, with VOICES inviting families and visitors of all ages to experience a mix of sound and light from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 June.
This free, hands-on artwork encourages curiosity and connection. Standing three metres tall, the installation is made up of 50 softly glowing translucent tubes that respond to touch, lighting up and creating sound as they move. As more people join in, the sounds build into a layered experience, making it just as enjoyable to explore together as it is on your own.
Created by creative studio Pulsing Heart, VOICES has been designed to be intuitive, welcoming and easy to enjoy. The soundscape, composed by Ekrem Eli Phoenix and recorded by the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs, is a bespoke 45-minute piece that evolves with every interaction, bringing the sculpture to life.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Tania Brown said VOICES offers a simple and inviting way for people to spend time together in the city centre.
"VOICES is a hands-on experience that invites people to interact with the sculpture and explore it in their own way," Cr Brown said.
"It's fun and a different experience to enjoy in CBD. I encourage you to visit Wollongong this weekend, spend some time with the installation with family or friends, and then enjoy the hospitality at one of the many venues nearby."
Open daily from 10am to 10pm, VOICES offers a playful and relaxed experience throughout the day, but after dark the illuminated sculpture really comes into its own.
A small program of after-dark activities will run across the three evenings from 5pm, including silent disco, roving performers and vocal and musical performances, with each night offering something a little different.
Cr Brown said it's a great option for a relaxed winter evening in the city.
"It really takes on a lovely atmosphere after dark, when the sculpture begins to glow. Rug up, come down in the evening and take your time with it. You might catch a silent disco or spot a few roving performers along the way."
