Volunteer fire fighter charged with arson, NSW

A man has been charged following an investigation into deliberately-lit fires in Sydney’s Macarthur region earlier this week, NSW Police say.

On Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 January 2018, emergency services responded to five fires in bushland at Menangle, Spring Farm and Smeaton Grange.

A small amount of land was destroyed in each fire.

Strike Force Ludwig was established by the State Crime Command’s Arson Unit to investigate the fires.

All are alleged to have been deliberately lit.

Following inquiries, detectives arrested a 33-year-old man at a home in Spring Farm about 2pm yesterday (Friday 19 January 2018).

The man, a volunteer fire fighter, was taken to Narellan Police Station where he was charged with five counts of intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread.

He was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on Monday 5 February 2018.
