Mooroopna will host the anticipated return of the CFA/VFBV State Firefighter Championships, with teams to converge on the North East town in late March.

Volunteers prepare for return of State Firefighter Championships

The State Championships will be held across two weekends, and will be the first time the Senior Rural and the Senior Urban events have been held simultaneously.

The two events, along with the Junior Rural State Championships will be held at the Mooroopna Recreation Reserve on 27 and 28 March, while the Junior Urban State Championships will be held one week earlier on 20 and 21 March at the same location.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said it will be a fantastic opportunity for brigades to highlight the dedication and skills of their members.

"The State Championships are a big part of CFA's volunteer culture, and promotes the important values of teamwork and respect," he said.

This year's events have been highly anticipated by brigades across the state, following the disappointing cancellation of last year's events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Acting Executive Director Volunteers and Capability DCO Peter O'Keefe said there has been an extraordinary amount of work to ensure the 2021 Championships are held in a COVID-safe and child-safe manner.

"The organising committees have been working very closely with the CFA Pandemic Management Team, DHHS, the Chief Health Officer, and other key stakeholders to ensure the health and wellbeing of our members remains paramount."

DCO O'Keefe said while both weekends will be closed to the public, the families of CFA members will be allowed to attend and support the competitors and local brigades.

"The Junior Championships are a great way to encourage and engage some of our youngest members, while the Senior events offer a great way to enjoy some friendly competition among like-minded CFA volunteers."

Events at the State Championships are based on practical firefighting activities, and build fitness, team skills and capabilities with hoses, hydrants and other equipment.
