Wandong Community Centre Upgrades Thrill Locals

Member for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage visited LB Davern Reserve on Thursday 21 August to see how the upgraded Wandong Community Centre is strengthening connections and opportunities for the local community.

Completed in late 2024, the $800,000 project has delivered a range of improvements that have transformed the centre into a modern, functional and welcoming community hub.

The works included the installation of new male, female and accessible toilet facilities, a fully updated kitchen, and an expanded meeting room with additional storage space to better cater for the needs of local user groups.

The main hall now features acoustic treatments that make it more comfortable for meetings, performances and social gatherings, while upgraded heating and cooling ensure the centre can be used comfortably year-round.

Accessibility and safety upgrades to parking, fencing, gates and surfaces have also made it easier for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the space.

The project was made possible thanks to $720,000 from the Victorian Government, $20,000 from the Wandong and Heathcote Junction Sports and Community Centre Committee of Management and $60,000 from Mitchell Shire Council.

Mitchell Shire Mayor John Dougall said the transformation of the centre was already having a positive impact.

"The upgrades have created a facility that can cater for a wider range of events and activities, giving local groups the space and amenities they need to thrive," he said.

"It's fantastic to see this investment making a difference for the people of Wandong and surrounding areas. We're very grateful for the support from the Victorian Government and the Wandong and Heathcote Junction Sports and Community Centre Committee of Management, whose commitment has been vital in bringing this project to life.

"I would also like to pay tribute to the late former Councillor Sue Marstaeller. Sue was a tireless advocate for her community and played an important role with the Committee.

"Her dedication and passion helped lay the foundations for projects like this, and it's fitting to acknowledge her contribution as the community enjoys the upgraded centre."
