A man wanted on a number of outstanding arrest warrants has been arrested after a police operation in Inverell yesterday.
About 2.30pm (Thursday 16 June 2022), officers attached to New England Police District were conducting proactive patrols along Byron Street, Inverell, when they recognised a man wanted on outstanding warrants.
The man allegedly fled on foot and was pursued by police through Farriers Lane and onto Captain Cook Drive before he entered the Macintyre River.
Shortly after, the man exited the water and was arrested by police without incident.
A backpack carried by the man was seized, with police locating items believed to be stolen.
The 35-year-old man was taken to Inverell Police Station and then conveyed to Inverell Hospital for treatment for possible hypothermia.
Upon his release from hospital, he was returned to Inverell Police Station where the outstanding arrest warrants were executed for domestic violence and property offences.
He was refused bail and will appear in Inverell Local Court today (Friday 17 June 2022).
