Waste not, want not

The City of Swan collects information about our recycling so that we can celebrate our wins and see where we can do even better.

In the 2019/20 financial year, the City emptied 1,231,608 recycling bins and sent 12,210 tonnes of material to our recycling facility. The data shows that our recycling is mostly made up of glass, mixed paper, cardboard and newspaper. People are also correctly recycling many steel cans, aluminium cans and recyclable plastics.

A staggering 10,419 tonnes of material was able to be recycled – a real win!

We also know there's room for improvement. Around 1,792 tonnes of material was contaminated and could not be processed for recycling. Some common contaminants include meat trays, aerosol cans, coffee cups and soft scrunchable plastics.
