Water play area makes a splash in Mapoon

The Palaszczuk Labor Government's record of delivery for the Mapoon community reached another milestone on Wednesday with the opening of the new water play park.

Minister for Local Government and Ministerial Champion for Mapoon, Stirling Hinchliffe, joined Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council Mayor Aileen Addo to unveil the completed $1.5 million project.

"The completion of this project delivers on part of an election commitment made by the Palaszczuk Labor Government to the people of Mapoon, and to Cape communities at the last election", Mr Hinchliffe said.

"This commitment to Mapoon includes a $3.3 million spend as part of the $600 million Works for Queensland program since 2016, a $4.9 million investment to seal the Mapoon airstrip and more than $540,000 of Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program funding since 2016".

Mayor Addo acknowledged the advocacy of State Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui, as well as the Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Jackie Trad, in securing this important investment in the dynamic Mapoon community, and for the Cape more broadly.

"Mapoon residents will now enjoy a place to cool off, particularly during the hot and humid summer months", said Mayor Addo.

"Mapoon is a great place to live, and to visit, and this investment in community facilities make it even better".

Member for Cook, Cynthia Lui, said that the splash park is a great community investment in Mapoon.

"It will help improve liveability in an already-fantastic Mapoon community", Ms Lui said.

"The splash park is just one of the many important investments the Palaszczuk Labor Government is making in Mapoon and the Cook electorate".
