Water Police rescue two fishermen from Port Phillip Bay

Water police rescued two fishermen from Port Phillip Bay after they got into difficulty off Altona overnight, Victoria Police say.

It’s understood the men launched their 4.5 metre boat at Altona last night during very calm conditions, but during the night the wind increased to 20 knots.

Waves then increased to between 1-1.5 metres and the mens’ boat began taking on water.

Water Police were called out to rescue the men about 2.45am.

During the rescue the mens’ boat sank and the men had to be pulled from water.

Both men were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The boat is expected to be salvaged today.

The incident is being investigated.
