Water Smart Package makes big splash with local businesses

Several local firms are big winners from Townsville City Council's $10 million Water Smart Package.

Addisons Universal Mitre 10, Bedrock Landscaping, Atomic Irrigation and Project Plants have been selected by Council to provide products and services including low-flow sprinklers, tap timers, native plants, compost bins, irrigation optimisation and lawn care packages.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the benefits from Council's $10 million Water Smart Package would flow across the city.

"There are major opportunities for the local businesses selected to provide these products for residents and body corporates to grow their revenue and expand," Cr Hill said.

"Not only will this funding help our community use water more efficiently, it will also support local jobs by providing a boost to several local businesses.

"The Water Smart Package will help grow jobs while ensuring we use water wisely across our community."

Member for Townsville Scott Stewart said it was crucial that the project received local support, provided local business opportunities and much-needed jobs for the region.

"The use of local businesses as part of the Buy Queensland initiative is driving more secure, quality, local jobs and safe workplaces and putting money in the pockets of local residents,'' Mr Stewart said.

"I am delighted that Townsville businesses are playing a key role as part of the Palaszczuk Government's $225 million investment into Townsville's future water security.''

Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook encouraged homeowners, renters and body corporates to take the plunge and register for the Water Smart Package.

"The program is available to everyone in the community from homeowners, to renters and body corporates," Cr Cook said.

"Importantly, it will provide $300, $500 or up to $1000 to help purchase water efficient products and services.

"Registrations of Interest are open until the end of March, but it's important to remind everyone they will need to register for the Package online when it opens before buying any products."

The Water Smart Package is funded from the Queensland Government's $225 million investment in water security in Townsville.

Globe Australia and PLD Holdings – which both have local branches and employ Townsville staff – were also selected to provide low-flow sprinklers, tap timers and lawn care services.
