Ways to celebrate AFL Grand Final this year

Under the current COVID-19 restrictions celebrations will look very different for footy fans this year, but there are still plenty of ways to watch the grand final and celebrate safely.

Below are some ways to show your support for our home team, the Cats, as they square off against the Tigers this Saturday 24 October.

Show your support from home

Let's make Geelong blue and white! To show your support for the Cats, why not decorate your property or your letter box with the team colours?

We'd love to see your creative ideas to help transform our city in the Cats' colours. Post photos of your grand final day plans, decorations and costumes in the comments of our football posts via Events Geelong on Facebook. We'll make sure these are shared with the Geelong Football Club.

Make sure you also hashtag #GeelongStrong in your posts on social media to show your support for the team.

Geelong in blue and white

We're also showing our support of the Cats ahead of Saturday night's AFL Grand Final.

Each night in the lead up to the game, we'll be lighting up City Hall blue and white along with the message 'Go Cats' projected on the façade of the building.

Our catenary lights at the intersection of Malop and Moorabool Streets in central Geelong are shining blue and white every evening this week and our Cats banners and billboards continue to be on display across the region. A Cats flags is also now flying high at City Hall.

Stay safe and celebrate

While this year may be different, the excitement is certainly still there! With the current COVID-19 restrictions in place for regional Victoria, we need to plan our celebrations on Saturday night accordingly.

We can't host parties or attend large gatherings on Saturday night. Watching the game at a local pub or restaurant is a great COVID-Safe way to enjoy the grand final in the company of others, while supporting our local venues as they recover from the impact of the restrictions.

If you are planning a small get-together at a public reserve or park, please ensure you are adhering to the current COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings and the by-laws for drinking in public places.

Please wear a face mask at all times, maintain a 1.5-metre distance from others and adhere to all other restrictions.

Go Cats!
