Weapons search at Rye

Police will have an increased presence in the Rye area throughout the night following recent instances of antisocial behaviour, Victoria Police say.

Under the Control of Weapons Act, Victoria Police have declared the foreshore and immediate surrounds a designated area for a weapons search.

A number of specialist units including Public Order Response Team, Mounted Branch and Dog Squad will be involved in the increased patrols.

Those participating in schoolies are reminded to be mindful and respectful of the community and any antisocial and drunken behaviour will not be tolerated.

Police responded to a brawl after a large number of youths gathered on the Rye pier overnight.

Officers responded to several reports of disruptive parties in the Rye and Blairgowrie areas prior to 11pm last night (30 November).

It is understood partygoers, believed to be aged in their late teens to early 20s, then moved on to the pier.

A number of people sustained minor injuries after a brawl broke out and received first aid at the scene.

Upon arrival, the crowd began throwing bottles at police who were forced to deploy capsicum spray.

A number of units, including officers from the Public Order Response Team and Dog Squad, also attended.

Two people are expected to be issued with infringement notices for riotous behaviour.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
