Welcome end to crucial fight for Catholic schools

Catholic education has welcomed the end of the non-government school funding impasse between Victoria and the Commonwealth, Acting Executive Director of Catholic Education Jim Miles says.

'Catholic school communities will welcome the agreement reached this afternoon,' Mr Miles said.

'After 18 months of fighting for fair funding, and the Victorian Government's standoff with Australian Government coming to an end, Catholic school parents finally have certainty about school funding for their children.

'While it is disappointing that we have had to wait until the final fortnight of the year, we are grateful that the Andrews Government and Morrison Government have ensured funding will flow to Catholic schools for teaching and learning in 2019.'

Mr Miles acknowledged that the Victorian Government had a responsibility to advocate for all Victorian schools.

'Of course Premier Andrews and Minister Merlino are entitled to go into battle for public schools,' said Mr Miles.

'Catholic education wants all schools to be properly funded – just not at the expense of separate school sectors being played off against one another like pawns on a political chess board, let alone held hostage by disputes they are not a party to.

'This episode must not be repeated.'
