Welcome Ministry announcement

Jane Howlett,Member for Prosser

I am very honored to be Tasmania's Minister for Sport and Recreation and Minister for Racing.

It is an incredible privilege to serve Tasmanians and I am committed to delivering the Gutwein majority Liberal Government's long term Plan for Tasmania to be the greatest state of opportunity.

This includes our commitment to being the healthiest state in Australia by 2025, which is why we are investing in key areas like sport and recreation to help see that vision become a reality.

Our investments in sport have a particular focus on boosting participation by women and girls, people with disability, children and young people, and those who face the biggest barriers to participation. In 2019-20 alone, over $28 million will be invested in initiatives that will boost participation and improve sport and recreation facilities and programs so as to grow the number of Tasmanians involved in sport.

The racing industry is a significant contributor to the Tasmanian economy, involving many hardworking Tasmanian small family businesses and providing jobs and opportunity in many regional and rural areas. As Minister for Racing I will continue to respect racing's strong local heritage and create the right conditions for a sustainable and rewarding industry. We will continue working with all stakeholders and provide meaningful support to ensure racing can grow, be competitive, and prosper in a responsible and sustainable way, with a continued focus on animal welfare and racing integrity.

People know me as an accessible local Member who is passionate about working hard to support and deliver for her local communities and I will bring that strong work ethic to these new roles.

I expect to receive full detailed briefings regarding my new portfolio responsibilities in coming weeks and I look forward to working with my Cabinet colleagues to deliver on our election commitments and long term Plan for Tasmania.
