Council is shining a spotlight on the valued contribution of older residents this Queensland Seniors Month, with activities and celebrations taking place across the region throughout October.
Queensland Seniors Month is celebrated annually from 1 to 31 October and recognises the diverse contributions older Queenslanders make to their families, communities, and regions.
Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development Councillor Peter Saxelby said Seniors Month was an important opportunity to celebrate senior residents and recognise their contribution to the region's vibrancy and culture.
"Our seniors bring an incredible wealth of knowledge, experience and community spirit to the Western Downs, and their contribution continues to make our region unique and a wonderful place to live," Cr Saxelby said.
"Whether they are volunteering, caring for their family, leading community groups or simply sharing their stories, our seniors play an invaluable role in keeping our community connected.
"Seniors Month is an opportunity to recognise those contributions and celebrate the people who have helped shape the communities we know and love today."
Council is working alongside local community groups and organisations to deliver activities across the region, with events designed to reflect local interests and encourage connection, participation, inclusion, and community pride.
The program will include activities such as morning teas, movie and cinema experiences, trivia, bingo, and other locally tailored activities, with events planned across Dalby, Bell, Chinchilla, Miles, Wandoan, and Tara.
Cr Saxelby said Seniors Month was not only a celebration, but also an opportunity to bring people together and strengthen connections across Western Downs communities.
"Strong communities are built on strong connections, and these events provide a wonderful opportunity for our senior residents to come together, catch up with familiar faces, make new connections, and enjoy everything Seniors Month has to offer," he said.
"I encourage senior residents and visitors to explore what's happening across the Western Downs this October and join us in celebrating the people who have given so much to our region.
"These activities are about creating opportunities for shared experiences, volunteering, community spirit, and stronger connections across our communities."
Activities will be held across the Western Downs throughout October.
