If you were an artist, how would you create artwork that shows softness and strength?
For Chaco Kato, her latest installation in Rye brings these ideas together.
Using repurposed yarns, bamboo and reused materials, the final artwork reminds Chaco of the Japanese proverb "the willow does not break". Like a willow tree, this artwork may seem soft and vulnerable but it's also strong and resilient.
Installed at the Community Grow and Play Garden in Rye, the "white nest" also celebrates International Women's Day, on Sunday 8 March 2026. This artwork recognises that everyone must embrace both their femininity and masculinity.
"Both sides must exist together," explains Chaco. This installation is a form of 'soft architecture', where fragility and strength harmoniously exist.
