Motor vehicles and parts lift wholesale trade sales

Leading the rise in wholesale trade sales in the March 2021 quarter was the motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts industry, which was up 18 percent ($512 million) from the December 2020 quarter.

"Wholesale trade sales of motor vehicles took a tumble in the COVID-affected June quarter. However, the increase in the March 2021 quarter, has lifted the year-ended March 2021 sales to just shy of the previous year's level," Ms Chapman said.

"At the same time, the high demand and import supply issues have caused wholesale trade vehicle stock levels to drop by more than $250 million over the same period."

Volumes are calculated by removing the effect of the price changes from sales values.

"Manufacturing sales continue to rise this March quarter following similar rises in December," Ms Chapman said.

"In the March quarter, the most substantial sales volume rises were in transport, machinery and equipment manufacturing, as well as meat and dairy product manufacturing."

Transport, machinery, and equipment manufacturing

By industry, transport equipment, machinery, and equipment manufacturing had the largest increase, up 6.9 percent ($208 million) in the March 2021 quarter.

"The electronic and electrical equipment manufacturing sub-industry had the lion's share of the sales for the March 2021 quarter," Ms Chapman said.

"Outputs from this industry fed into the exports of optical, medical, and measuring equipment goods, which have increased over 50 percent during the last 12 months."

Conversely, the transport equipment manufacturing sub-industry had sales suffer with the lack of demand for aircraft maintenance and aircraft parts.

Meat and dairy products

Meat and dairy products manufacturing sales volumes rose 1.3 percent ($104 million) in the March 2021 quarter, the second largest industry rise.

"In the beginning of the March month, dairy prices rose their highest levels in almost seven years. Ms Chapman said.
