Why Ten People Split $40 Million Powerball Win

A single ticket purchased in the far southwest of NSW scooped the entire $40 million Division One prize in Powerball draw 1424. You can find the full breakdown of the draw winnings here as we reported just after the draw.

The reason why a single ticket disrupted the quiet life of the small town of Wentworth is the ticket represents a syndicate of 10 people from there, each now an overnight multi-millionaire.

Interestingly, the syndicate not only hit the jackpot in Division One but also scored additional winnings in the second, eighth, and ninth divisions through their PowerHit entry. The extra winnings took the group's total earnings to $40,517,739. Each member is now entitled to a sum of $4,051,773.90.

The drawn numbers for the Powerball draw were [10], [35], [27], [32], [6], [14], [31], with the Powerball number [6].

Shares of the winning syndicate, dubbed 'Syndicate 1,' were sold at Wentworth Lotto and News, located at 55 Darling Street. Rowan Congress.

"We've only been here for two years, and this is the first division one win we've sold. How great that it's a syndicate, and lots of people get to share the prize," the store owner said.

Not all syndicate members are aware of their new-found fortune, especially those who purchased unregistered shares.

"If you bought a share into a Powerball syndicate from Wentworth Lotto and News, it's time to check it," urged the lottery operator, advising winners to initiate the prize claim process by contacting them.

The total prize money distributed across all divisions in this particular Powerball draw was a staggering $67,421,076.52.

A lottery syndicate is a group of individuals who play the lottery together. By pooling their money and buying multiple tickets collectively, players increase their chance of winning a lottery draw and share any winnings between them. The increased number of tickets obviously improves the group's odds of winning prizes, though any winnings must be divided among all syndicate members according to their respective shares.

You could start a Syndicate with your friends, family or work mates. You can also join syndicates already set up in-store, and play with others in your local community.
