Wildlife Friendly Halloween Decorations

Recent studies have found approximately 30% of Australian bird nests contain human-made materials.

But don't worry, we've got you covered for wildlife safe ways to celebrate Halloween this nesting season!

  • Use natural materials including straw, sticks and twigs, leaves, and sheep's wool.
  • Decorate the inside of your windows. This is a fun approach which can reduce the occurrence of birds flying into windows. Your decorations will also last longer!
  • Turn off decoration lighting after 10 pm. Unnecessary lighting at night disrupts the behaviour and sleep for both people and our native species.
  • Do not use fake spiderwebs. These are especially bad for native wildlife and can lead to entanglement, injury, and at times, death.
  • Avoid synthetic materials such as fishing line, cotton wool, balloons and fruit netting.
