Will Labor Really Stand Up For Tasmanian Salmon?

Eric Abetz, Minister for Business, Industry and Resources

Tasmanian Labor's newly-found support for salmon farming and the many regional jobs it supports is welcome, but actions speak louder than words.

The real test of Labor's support for the sector will be whether Janie Finlay or newly-minted leader Dean Winter can join the Government in lobbying their Federal Labor colleague, Tanya Plibersek, and fight tooth and nail for salmon jobs on the West Coast.

"The Tasmanian Liberal Government's position is absolutely clear: requests to reconsider the existing environmental approvals for salmon farming in Macquarie Harbor have no sound basis and no change to the original decision is required," said Minister Abetz.

"We have publicly released our submission to Minister Plibersek. That Tasmanian Labor have not done the same simply casts doubt on the strength of their apparent support."

"Tasmanians employed in our salmon industry can rest assured that the Tasmanian Liberal Government will leave no stone unturned in our support of their jobs."
