A new netball pavilion was officially opened in Winchelsea today, providing new opportunities for healthier, happier and more socially connected residents.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the new pavilion was part of the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government's investment in regional communities.
"Investing in regional infrastructure supports the growth of our country and there is no better place to start than supporting our local sporting clubs," Mr McCormack said.
"Now that the new pavilion is open and ready for use by the Winchelsea Football Netball Club, we look forward to more people getting out onto the court or field in Surf Coast Shire."
Senator for Victoria David Van, who attended today's opening event, said the new club room included a range of facilities lacking in the previous premises.
"Female-friendly change rooms for teams and umpires in addition to public toilets, a first aid room and equipment storage will create a modern and accessible sporting facility for Winchelsea," Senator Van said.
"With the inclusion of an undercover seating area for spectators, this project has also given residents a chance to see more of the action and support their friends and family out on the field."
Surf Coast Shire Mayor Rose Hodge said the fit-for-purpose facility would become the sporting pulse of the community, as well as accommodating those who look for a place to call home.
"Loneliness and isolation are unfortunately prevalent in regional communities, so investing in sporting clubs and infrastructure is necessary to create places where people can meet and get to know each other," Cr Hodge said.
"Any opportunity we have to look out for those in need and strengthen the bonds within our community is an opportunity we are always happy to take."
This project received $200,000 from the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government under the Building Better Regions Fund. This is an $841 million investment designed to create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities into the future.
The Surf Coast Shire also contributed $458,251, Winchelsea Football Netball Club $30,000, Eastern Reserve Committee $15,000 and Winchelsea Lions Club $9,091.
