Mitchell Shire Council is continuing its investment in safer, more accessible streets with upcoming works on Windham Street in Wallan.
The project, which is funded by the Department of Transport and Planning and the Transport Accident Commission's Safe Local Roads and Streets Program, is designed to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety, slow vehicle speeds and strengthen connections to key community spaces in one of Wallan's busiest areas.
What's happening?
A new raised pedestrian priority crossing will be installed between Watson Street and Queen Street. The project will:
- Slow vehicles and give priority to pedestrians and cyclists
- Introduce a 40km/h speed zone between Watson Street and Queen Street
- Improve visibility with new signage, line marking and lighting
- Enhance drainage to accommodate the raised structure
- Link with the existing shared user path for better accessibility
- Link Hadfield Park with the newly upgraded Wallan Community Park
When?
Works are scheduled to begin the week of 8 September and are expected to be completed by late October, weather permitting. The working hours will be 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
Traffic impacts
- During work hours, Windham Street will be reduced to a single lane, with traffic management in place to allow vehicles to travel in both directions. The road will be restored to two lanes outside working hours.
- Access to Wallan Community Park from Windham Street will be closed while works are underway. Alternate pedestrian access to the park is available via Wedding Drive.
- The entrance to the 1st Wallan Scout Group hall will be temporarily closed to allow the driveway to be upgraded.
- There will also be partial lane closures of Windham Street for asphalt works. Further updates will be provided to the community once dates of these works are confirmed.
- Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to allow extra time for travel.
