Winner of Citizen's Award announced, SA

Streaky Bay man James Smith was today named as the Lions Club of the City of Adelaide and South Australia Police 2018 Citizen of the Year, according to SA Police.

Known as Trevlyn, Mr Smith is a lifelong resident of Streaky Bay and, with the support of his wife Carolyn, is regarded as a prolific community volunteer with more than 40 years spent serving the Streaky Bay State Emergency Service and Country Fire Service.

The annual award is presented to a civilian who performs extraordinary service to assist SAPOL in the performance of their duties.

Mr Smith was presented with the award by Commissioner Grant Stevens at a ceremony at SA Police headquarters this afternoon.

Through his role as SES Group Captain, Mr Smith has volunteered countless hours ensuring the communication towers in Streaky Bay and around the wider district are maintained and kept in peak operating order to ensure the safety of his community during times of emergency.

He is also a current and long-time committee member of the Streaky Bay Road Safety Group working alongside local police, SA Ambulance and members of the community to implemented programs and initiatives to help ensure the safety everyone on our country roads and highways.

In 2016 he was the well-deserved and proud recipient of an Australia Day Honours award, being presented with the Emergency Services Medal (pictured).

Mr Smith is the current Streaky Bay SES Captain and in 2018 was awarded with SES Life Membership.
