Winter events to embrace elements

A muddy play day, outdoor yoga and an expanded neon-lights display are all coming to the city as part of the Warrnambool City Council's winter events program.

Last year's wildly popular Solstice Searching event returns on June 18, with everyone encouraged to follow the clues and find an all-new collection of neon sculptures throughout the city.

The neon fun continues at the Botanic Gardens on June 19 with the Solstice Search Party. The neon sculptures from the previous night will all be at the gardens along with light-themed art installations and activations from some of Warrnambool's most talented creatives.

Warrnambool's yoga instructors have united to host free yoga sessions on the Civic Green on June 27, encouraging everyone to try the different forms of yoga on offer in Warrnambool.

And to celebrate International Mud Day, a huge range of muddy activities for kids are planned for July 3. The event will be held at Shipwreck Bay Holiday Park, with the on-site showers ensuring everyone can go home squeaky clean.

Warrnambool Mayor Cr Vicki Jellie said that these events had been put together with the weather conditions in mind.

"Break out the beanies, scarves and mittens…winter is here and we're choosing to embrace it," she said.

"Everyone knows that Warrnambool is a major events hub in summer, but when life gives you mud, put your gumboots on, invite all your friends, and splash around in it.

"There's no need to stay inside for the next three months. Rug up, maybe bring a brollie, and join the fun.

"As well as drawing people from further afield to the city, we hope to be able to offer something fun for locals to get involved in too at a traditionally quieter time of year from an events and tourism perspective.

"In 2020, Solstice Searching was a real highlight for Warrnambool at a time when there was a lot to be worried about, so I'm especially excited to see what this event has in store."

Clues for the Solstice Searching scavenger hunt will be published on www.visitwarrnambool.com.au on June 18 with anyone who finds all of the neon sculptures able to enter into a draw to win gift vouchers to their choice of local business.

Solstice Search Party, Namiste Outside and Mudbool are all free to attend, but attendees need to register online at www.warrnambool.vic.gov.au/winter. Tickets are limited.
