Winter wrong on racing review

Jane Howlett,Minister for Racing

It is clear that the Labor Member for Franklin, Dean Winter was either not paying attention in Parliament today, or he is continuing the Labor pattern of deliberately misleading Tasmanians.

I made it very clear in the House today that there will be an independent review into the Racing Regulation Act 2004, which will include the functions of both the Office of Racing Integrity (ORI) and Tasracing.

The review will be undertaken by an independent expert, to be announced in due course, along with the terms of reference and a Discussion Paper to encourage broad engagement, including extensive consultation with the industry and the community.

This review will be an important step to ensure that the governance and integrity model in Tasmania is effective in delivering probity and integrity with appropriate education, compliance and enforcement functions that are easily understood by participants and the community.

The Tasmanian Government is a strong supporter of the racing industry, and we are committed to strengthening the regulations, processes and structures which support its operations.
