Artificial intelligence is set to revolutionize how the world predicts weather and responds to environmental challenges. WMO and the UAE's National Center of Meteorology convened a pioneering conference to ensure benefits are spread equitably for the global good, bringing together more than 50 experts from NMHSs, ECMWF, academia, and the private sector (including Google, IBM, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Tomorrow.io, Brightband and HMEI).
The meeting issued a Conference Statement underscoring shared and open data and tooling, coordinated benchmarks, and human-centred service design so AI is trusted, transparent and interoperable, while respecting the authoritative role of NMHSs. Priorities include capacity building, regionally based pilots, dialogue on public/private datasets, and support for observations and physics-based systems.
The WMO AI conference statement will serve as a shared vision and will inform discussions at the WMO Extraordinary Congress from 20-24 October .
