Wollongong cemeteries maintenance hampered

In the lead up to Mother's Day, the regular maintenance of cemeteries in the Illawarra has been hampered following heavy rainfall.

“Unfortunately after recent rain, the ground is still extremely soft, and it’s preventing us from undertaking not just our regular maintenance, but also the additional work we usually put into preparing for Mothers Day,” said Wollongong City Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery.

According to him, the city council decided not to mow while the ground is soft because it may cause major damage to both graves and the surrounding ground.

He added that Kembla Grange Cemetery is still waterlogged and Helensburgh Cemetery entry road is damaged and trees were blown over in the storms.

Council’s maintenance staff are making every effort to clear the back log of maintenance work as soon as possible, and with minimum disruption to families and visitors.
