Woman rescued from burning car in Brunswick

Police have rescued a woman who was trapped inside her burning car in Brunswick earlier this morning, Victoria Police say.

Investigators believe the 19-year-old woman fell asleep in her car, which was parked on Sydney Road, sometime before 1.55am.

An alert member of the public noticed the car had caught fire and raised the alarm, as the woman was unable to escape from the vehicle.

Police members at a nearby police station were notified and used batons to smash the car’s windows.

Police pulled the woman to safety with the help of another member of the public.

She was later taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation.

One police member sustained minor cuts to his hands and was also taken to hospital.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
