Woman's Death Spurs Wollongong Critical Incident

A critical incident has been declared, after a woman died in the Wollongong CBD today.

About 11.05am today (Tuesday 11 August 2026), police were called to a building on Gladstone Avenue, near Frederick Street, Wollongong, following reports of a concern for welfare.

Officers attached to Wollongong Police District attended and attempted to speak with a woman – believed to be aged in her 50s - who then fell from the balcony.

The woman died at the scene.

A crime scene has been established and a Critical Incident Team from Lake Illawarra Police District will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC).

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
