NSW's state-wide women's safety service peak – WDVCAS NSW – has welcomed the Federal Opposition Leader, Bill Shorten's announcement today that a Labor Government will raise $60 mil from a banking fairness fund to provide tailored support packages for victims of domestic violence.
"This is the policy shift we have been asking for from the Federal Government," says Hayley Foster, Director of WDVCAS NSW. "For far too long we have seen a system which traps women and their children in violent relationships with the only escape route involving likely homelessness and poverty."
The flexible support packages are to be based upon the Victorian model which is designed to facilitate a personalised and holistic response to victims/survivors experiencing domestic violence by assisting them to access support, move out of crisis, stabilise and improve their safety, well-being and independence.
